Description
A recipe for classic Swedish meatballs served with a creamy brown gravy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 2 tbsp butter, for frying
- 2 tbsp butter, for gravy
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, and allspice in a bowl. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Roll the mixture into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. You should have about 30-35 meatballs.
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Brown the meatballs in batches, turning to cook evenly on all sides. Remove the browned meatballs and set them aside.
- For the gravy, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the heavy cream. Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for 5 to 7 minutes, or until cooked through.
Notes
- Serve the meatballs and gravy over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
- You can substitute half-and-half for heavy cream if you prefer a lighter sauce.
