Description

A simple recipe for hearty split pea soup made in a slow cooker.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 1 pound smoked ham hock or ham bone
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed split peas, ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, chicken broth, thyme, bay leaf, and pepper into the slow cooker.
  2. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours.
  3. Remove the ham hock and bay leaf before serving. Shred any usable meat from the ham hock and return it to the soup.
  4. If the soup is too thick, add a little water or broth until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Taste and add salt if needed, as the ham may provide enough salt.

Notes

  • For a smoother soup, you can use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup before serving.
  • If you do not have a ham hock, use 1 cup of diced smoked ham and reduce the cooking time slightly.
