Description

A straightforward recipe for classic layered beef lasagna.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet. Drain any fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for one minute more.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  6. In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  8. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  9. Arrange four cooked noodles over the sauce.
  10. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  11. Sprinkle with one-third of the mozzarella cheese.
  12. Spoon half of the remaining meat sauce over the cheese.
  13. Repeat the layers: four noodles, the rest of the ricotta mixture, one-third of the mozzarella, and the rest of the meat sauce.
  14. Top with the final four noodles and the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  15. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  16. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • For easier slicing, chill the lasagna for at least 30 minutes before reheating or serving cold.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or Italian sausage for the ground beef.
