Description
A simple recipe for shepherd’s pie using ground turkey instead of traditional lamb or beef.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 3 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- While potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up, until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion, carrots, and celery to the skillet. Cook until vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in thyme and rosemary. Cook for 1 minute.
- Sprinkle flour over the turkey mixture and stir well for 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in chicken broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in frozen peas and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the skillet from heat.
- Drain the cooked potatoes. Mash them with milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the turkey mixture in the skillet.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the filling is bubbly.
Notes
- For a crispier topping, place the skillet under the broiler for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- You can substitute sweet potatoes for white potatoes for a different flavor profile.
