Description

A simple recipe for shepherd’s pie using ground turkey instead of traditional lamb or beef.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 3 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. While potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up, until browned. Drain excess fat.
  5. Add onion, carrots, and celery to the skillet. Cook until vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
  6. Stir in thyme and rosemary. Cook for 1 minute.
  7. Sprinkle flour over the turkey mixture and stir well for 1 minute.
  8. Gradually pour in chicken broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  9. Stir in frozen peas and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Remove the skillet from heat.
  10. Drain the cooked potatoes. Mash them with milk and butter until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  11. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the turkey mixture in the skillet.
  12. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • For a crispier topping, place the skillet under the broiler for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  • You can substitute sweet potatoes for white potatoes for a different flavor profile.
