Description

A basic recipe for making homemade pumpkin puree from fresh pumpkins.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium sugar pumpkin (about 3 lbs)
  • Water for boiling or steaming

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or prepare a large pot for steaming.
  2. Wash the pumpkin thoroughly. Cut the pumpkin in half from stem to base. Scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp. Discard the seeds or reserve them for roasting separately.
  3. Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down in a baking dish with about half an inch of water, or place them in a steamer basket over boiling water.
  4. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or steam for 25 to 35 minutes, until the flesh is very tender when pierced with a fork.
  5. Let the pumpkin cool until you can handle it safely.
  6. Scoop the cooked flesh out of the skin.
  7. Place the flesh into a food processor or blender. Process until completely smooth. Add a small amount of water if the mixture is too thick to blend, adding only enough to keep the blades moving.
  8. Measure the puree. For every 1 cup of puree needed for a recipe, you will need about 1 pound of raw pumpkin.

Notes

  • You can freeze the finished puree in airtight containers for up to one year.
  • Do not use large carving pumpkins; they have too much water and stringy texture. Use sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins for best results.
